Tool owners are encouraged to promote discussion and create reviews about the tools Harbor Freight offers. Other reviews are welcome for cheap tools from other stores, like Princess Auto and Power Fist. • Do not just say a tool is crap. Give reasons why (pros and cons). • Do not attack other readers. Remouse full version. I’ve had the 20v Hercules drill now for just over a year and no signs of it giving up anytime soon. I’d say it isn’t quit Milwaukee grade, but closer to it than DeWalt ever has been. Also, I bought the Hercules 20v drill and impact both for $180.00 on sale, so price wise vs. • Follow • Please post pictures of your tools. • Please write about your experiences with your tools • Please Use tags when talking about non-harbor freight tools, like [Princess Auto]. • Posts about upcoming and current deals are encouraged. *We the mods are not related to the company in any way. We would just like to provide a space to review and talk about their tools. Designing a quality tool isn't some crazy voodoo magic. Milwaukee for example doesn't really even have it's own engineers anymore. TechTronic Industries is a major Chinese conglomerate that builds power tools, they own tons of factories and pretty much have built the best mouse trap when it comes to mass produced power tools. They build to a price point and slap a brand on it, brands such as Milwaukee, Ridgid, Homelite and Ryobi. DeWalt is another one that isn't it's own high end brand. It's a label owned by Stanley. Stanley chooses to keep DeWalt as their higher end brand, as opposed to the products they label with Porter Cable and Black and Decker, and now will be doing the same with Craftsman. Makita is one of the only real premium brands left, and that is because they are still a Japanese company that tries to stick to Japanese ideals. They aren't reinventing the wheel, they are just willing to invest way more capital and work on lower margins to build a competitively priced yet superior product. Harbor Freight's claim that they hired engineers from those companies is likely overstated or flat out lies. It also doesn't really matter, any decent engineer can design an amazing tool, it's a matter of if the bean counters will let it be built and the marketers can actually sell it. Just because Harbor Freight hires an engineer from Space-X doesn't mean they are now going to build a rocket and land it on a boat. Being that Harbor Freight doesn't own it's own factories suggests they really aren't serious about quality control. They take a design and shop it to all the factories in China and go with whomever is the most competitive. It's obvious though that they don't go through rigorous QA when different SKU's sometimes come in different sized boxes or have minor differences. So if a manufacture can slip a different sized BOX through QA or a different switch, things a casual observer can spot instantly, what do you think gets slipped through that can't be easily seen with the untrained naked eye? ![]() My guess bearings, wire gauges, material specs, machining tolerances. All things that other major brands have definite specs and QA checks for. Some of the Hercules stuff might actually 'beat DeWalt.' But I would be willing to be there will be just as many of those Hercules power tools that wouldn't pass Black and Decker QA. It's hit and miss, and it is going to be an uphill battle to prove that a premium product line is actually premium quality. I'm a fan of a lot of Harbor Freight stuff, but I just can't see anyone serious about tools choosing a Hercules 12' miter saw or 4.5 angle grinder over a DeWalt, especially when the prices are beginning to converge. I actually have a 12' DeWalt DWS780, and I paid less than the $399 the Hercules will supposedly be priced at. (Albeit it was a few years ago) Typically they run promos on that saw that include a free miter saw stand. The DeWalt also comes with a 3 year warranty and is considered the industry standard 12' miter saw. (And there are better options on the market now) I find it hard to believe that Harbor Freight will show them much competition. On one laptop allown i've had to reinstall windows 10 15 times because of the way i had to mess with things that i don't understand just to get it usable! I'm not even going to go into my dispute with microsoft and how windows 10 discriminates against people who use high contrast! Microsoft word dark modern. Even then you get things like the settings app (something that has no Wright being on a pc) crashing, whitch means you have to go all the way back to windows 7 and then start all over again! I also don't see how they will justify a $200/100% premium, over their standard 12' miter saw. I can see that being a move that can easily backfire without the proper marketing, which Harbor Freight has no idea how to do and has never done before. When you have a Chicago Electric 12' miter saw on coupon for $130 sitting next to a 12' Hercules miter saw for $399, people are going to wonder why their is such a price difference. It will subliminally tell people the Chicago Electric must be crappy if it's half or even a third the price of the Hercules.
